Polarization measurements are also used to determine optical constants and to assist the assignment of observed absorption bands to normal modes of vibration. The Spectrum GX, Spectrum 2000 and System 2000 FTIR spectrometers can have software controlled polarizers installed inside the instrument, but other PerkinElmer infrared instruments will require a polarizer, mounted in the sample compartment.
