Introduction

Advanced polymer materials are increasingly used alongside metals and ceramics to meet demanding performance requirements for the needs of global industry including aerospace, automotive, and energy generation and storage. These polymers provide capabilities well beyond those of conventional plastics, offering strength, durability, weight reduction, and functionality that enable their use in challenging applications such as chassis components of F1 cars or anti-lightning coatings on aircraft.

In advanced polymers, structural defects, contaminants, inconsistent formulations or processing, or incorrect chemical or crystal structures can limit performance or be failure points. As a result, the successful development and use of advanced polymers requires a clear understanding of their chemical and physical properties, consistent production methods, and the ability to identify and diagnose potential failure modes.

Polymer characterization methods that deliver reliable results across a material’s life cycle—from research and development to field performance—are therefore essential. As industries adopt more-complex polymer materials for challenging applications, established techniques such as molecular spectroscopy and thermal analysis provide a foundation for assessing polymer performance and quality.
